1973-1977 | This picture is from the CEC Entertainment 4th Quarter Video Update.
This costume was what Nolan Bushnell was going to call Coyote Pizza. He ordered what he thought was a large coyote costume. Instead, a large gray rat showed up. Due to this, he started shaping the restaurant around a rat instead. He was going to call the main character, "Rick Rat". However, the board told him that people would not want to go to a restaurant whose mascot was a rat. Eventually, when the first restaurant opened, this version was never used for any other purpose than the early Atari mascot.
1977-1984 | This costume was the first official Chuck E. Cheese costume. A smaller head was made with a red and yellow derby on top of his head. He now wears a vest with buttons and a bow tie. Each vest was made slightly different, with one being made for every location.
1984-1987 | Designed by Harold Goldbrandsen, this costume now featured blushes on Chuck E.'s cheeks. He also had his name on his derby hat. Sometimes, his tail would be strapped onto his side to prevent yanking.
Originally, Chuck E.'s vest had yellowish-orange checkerboards and had the words "Pizza Time Theatre" on his derby before the company merged with Showbiz Pizza Place. Although most restaurants stopped using the costume by 1988, some Chuck E. Cheese's locations still used this until the early 1990s.
1981-1987; 1989-1993 | This Chuck E. Cheese costume had an articulated head. Chuck E.'s eyelids and his mouth could move. This was only used in commercials, and never appeared in any stores widespread.
1987-1993 | Now, this Chuck E. Cheese costume had larger ears, an improved eye focus, and the blushes from Chuck E.'s cheeks were removed.
Many clothing for this costume were used. For example, the tuxedo clothing had a red bowtie, a black-and-gold (sometimes black only) tuxedo suit, and tuxedo pants. Sometimes, Chuck E. had a black derby hat. Another article of clothing was a black bowtie, a yellowish-green sports coat that had his name it it, red shorts and red shoes.
1993 - 1997 | A new and improved Chuck E. Cheese costume was introduced with major changes from earlier costumes. This included Chuck E.'s eyes, mouth, ears, and eyebrows. His tail was removed.
During the first years of the costume, Chuck E. had slightly bigger eye pupils, thicker eyebrows, and eyelid colors.
2001-2013 | Chuck E. was given another makeover. This time, it introduces the most iconic and beloved version of Chuck, Avenger Chuck.
He wears a purple and green cap with a yellow C, a green, purple, and yellow shirt also with a yellow C, and green shorts. Like the previous costume, Chuck E. had many different variant outfits over the years like the “Cool Chuck” outfits, and sports clothing from the previous costume. Despite the character's redesign in 2012, the costume lasted until 2013.
1996-1999 | This Chuck E. Cheese costume had an articulated head, and could move Chuck E.'s eyelids and mouth, just like the Pizza Time Theatre Chuck E. Cheese head. This head was only used in the Awesome Adventure Machine showtapes, "Cool Chuck" commercials, and in the direct-to-video movie, "Chuck E. Cheese In The Galaxy 5000".
2012-Present | This is the current Chuck E. Cheese costume. Now, Chuck E. resembles his current design, unlike his animated counterpart, as well as long, green sleeves attached to shirt to hide the performer's arms, just like his predecessor. |
